In the Luthiers course you get a chance design and build an acoustic or classical guitar from selected Australian or Exotic tone woods using mostly hand tools.
We explore a comprehensive range of traditional and contemporary bracing systems to ‘tailor’ the sound that most suits your playing.
These bracing systems include Fan Classical, Fan Flamenco, Ladder, Radial, Falcate, X brace, lattice and Double Top. We look at how any one of these bracing systems gets transposed onto a range of body shapes.
We look at all the neck to body joins and select from Spanish Heel, Dovetail, Bolt on and Bolt on Bolt off.
When your instrument is almost finished we explore the resonant frequency of your top, air and back and try and shift the frequency to our target using a frequency analyser and Chladni pattern analysis.
We take an excursion to a saw mill and look at how timber is milled and what to look for.
Finally when your instrument is ready for finishing we can choose between French polish or Nitro Cellulose finish depending on time.
The evening of the last day of the course we have wine food and music on our instruments to celebrate.
Numbers are limited to 4 students.
